The University of Waterloo has defended its title as Canada’s top technology school and reclaimed the title of “Canada’s Most Innovative University.”
The newest edition of the Maclean’s University Rankings has put UWaterloo at #1 in Canada for both computer science and engineering. For computer science, the university was tied with both the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia, and in engineering, UWaterloo shared the prize with the University of Toronto.
The lesson: locating your company in the Toronto-Waterloo Corridor means accessing the best tech talent Canada has to offer.
UWaterloo has also regained the title “Canada’s Most Innovative University,” which it had previously held for 28 consecutive years before a second-place finish in 2020. Adding to the accolades, UWaterloo was named Canada’s third-best comprehensive university – which includes schools with a good balance of research and academics – and ranked third overall out of the 49 post-secondary institutes included in the study. Wilfrid Laurier University, also located in Waterloo, ranked 7th in the comprehensive category and 23rd overall.
This ranking for the University of Waterloo should come as no surprise. Earlier this year, the QS World University Rankings had the school in the global top-25 for computer science and top-40 for engineering. In addition to having top-notch programs, the university also has exceptionally large enrollment, with more engineering students than MIT and Stanford combined. In fact, the engineering school is the largest in Canada.
This news also comes on the heels of a CBRE Scoring Tech Talent report that identified Waterloo as the #1 small tech talent market in North America, surpassing many of our American competitors including Pittsburgh and Columbus.
