We know that the University of Waterloo is a special place. It seems that the premier global ranking for universities agrees.
The latest edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) global university rankings has recognized the University of Waterloo (UWaterloo) as one of the world’s top engineering, technology and science universities. That includes a top-40 rank in Engineering & Technology, a top-80 rank in Natural Sciences and a host of top-100 ranks at the subject level.
The university was ranked 38th in Engineering & Technology, which includes computer science and most engineering disciplines. This ranking puts it ahead of Yale University (43rd) and Columbia University (47th) in the United States, the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands (50th) and the Technische Universität Berlin (60th).
UWaterloo, which was previously ranked 41st in this category, is now catching well-known engineering and technology powerhouses like Cornell University (36th) in the United States and KTH Royal Institute of Technology (31st) in Sweden. This is particularly impressive since UWaterloo has far more students enrolled in engineering than most other universities.
The University of Waterloo was ranked 79th in Natural Sciences, which includes subjects like chemistry, materials science and mathematics. This ranking puts UWaterloo ahead of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology (85th) in Sweden, Johns Hopkins University (85th) in the United States and Nagoya University (82nd) in Japan and tied with Carnegie Mellon University in the United States.
Finally, at the subject level, UWaterloo came in at 23rd overall for computer science, 35th for mathematics and 48th for electrical and electronic engineering. The university ranked top-100 in 12 additional subjects as well.
QS is the world’s largest international higher education network. It ranks the world’s top universities on 51 subjects based on factors such as academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, student-to-faculty ratio, the proportion of international faculty and proportion of international students. The rankings provide a comparative analysis on the performance of 14,435 individual university programs, taken by students at 1,453 universities, found in 86 locations across the world, in 51 academic disciplines and five broad Faculty Areas.
This new ranking follows a ranking from Maclean’s Magazine recognizing UWaterloo as the top university in Canada for engineering, computer science and mathematics.
