One of Waterloo’s most successful global companies, ATS Automation Tooling Systems, is planning a multimillion-dollar expansion at its Cambridge headquarters that will add 122,000 square feet of space to an existing building.
The three-storey expansion includes 67,000 square feet of new manufacturing space, 36,000 square feet of office space and a 19,000 square foot innovation centre. For a company that is growing rapidly – they added 170 full-time positions to their 1,100 workforce at the headquarters in the last year – this space is very necessary. The company plans to hire 120 additional positions in the near future.
The innovation centre will focus on advancing some of the company’s key product lines – seeking to anticipate their customers’ future needs.
“What’s the next frontier for us, what’s the next thing that our customers need next year, five years down the road, that we should be working on now to be ready for that need,” said Chris Hart, president of life sciences at ATS, in the Waterloo Region Record’s coverage of the expansion.
Founded in 1978, ATS Automation has about 4,400 employees around the world and had revenues of $1.25 billion in its most recent fiscal year. The company’s automation solutions are used in a wide variety of applications, including food and consumer products, transportation, energy and more. This expansion at the company’s headquarters is part of a $60 million initiative that will see investments in ATS Automation’s assets around the world, too.
This is the fourth multinational to announce growth plans in Waterloo in the last two-and-a-half months, following new investments from Toyota, SAP and LEONI.
