Waterloo's ecosystem is filled with global giants. Here are ten multinational tech companies that are booming in Waterloo.

We talk about Waterloo’s booming tech talent community a lot. Our ecosystem, too. Oh, and our incredible, world-class tech university.

Here’s the deal: anyone can benefit from our incredible talent pipeline and prime location. You just have to come to Waterloo. We’ve attracted a lot of major companies because of those perks – sometimes it’s hard to keep track of them all. Where do we start?

Why don’t we start with the largest tech companies with offices in our community.

Here are the ten largest tech companies that are thriving in Waterloo’s ecosystem:

Google

That’s right, one of the biggest companies in the world has a home base in Waterloo. For over a decade, our community has hosted Google’s Canadian engineering headquarters – it’s their biggest R&D office in the country. Their continuous growth has shifted them from a four-person startup to a substantial operation with capacity for 3,000 workers and an all-new facility – their second major office space in Waterloo – that will open in a matter of months.

BlackBerry

BlackBerry is an incredibly large and versatile company– a homegrown giant. Known for inventing the most secure smartphone, they’ve transformed into one of the world’s largest cybersecurity firms. Their consistent, trusted technology has earned them the title as one of Canada’s most important tech companies. Oh, and their HQ is still in Waterloo.

SAP

SAP is one of the world’s leading producers of software for business processes, with their technology helping to develop solutions and facilitate effective information flow across organizations. They’ve got more than 230 million cloud users and have continued growing their presence in the David Johnston Research + Technology Park – on University of Waterloo’s campus – for years.

Oracle NetSuite

Oracle NetSuite is all about efficiency – they help companies manage key business processes with a single, fully integrated cloud-based system. They have more than 400,000 customers and their Waterloo office continues to develop cloud and human resource products. It’s right in the heart of our community – steps from Google’s HQ, Communitech and our future Transit Hub.

EPAM Systems

EPAM Systems has expanded into over 55 countries and regions and has more than 53,000 employees. They work across almost every industry, from manufacturing and automotive to software and health insurance. Their highly adaptable digital platform and software development services help customers overcome their biggest technological obstacles. EPAM joined the Waterloo ecosystem in 2021 on the hunt for the type of talent that can drive innovation in a global giant.

This cybersecurity innovator is one of Waterloo’s unicorns – a company with a $1+ billion valuation. Arctic Wolf’s co-founder is from Waterloo, and most of their R&D operations, along with half of their staff, are in the region as well, making it their largest office. With fast and cost-effective protection services, it’s no surprise the company continues to dominate the security sector.

OpenText

OpenText manages information securely and intelligently to face the most complex digital transformation programs. eSentire

Another Waterloo unicorn and global cybersecurity company, eSentire’s platform is used by 1,200 organizations in more than 75 countries. They are a recognized leader in the managed detection and response (MDR) space. Their software comprises of a new category of cybersecurity that detects complex threats, preventing business-altering events.

McAfee

One more cybersecurity company, just for kicks. McAfee is one of the most recognizable brands in consumer computing and they’ve been in Waterloo for over two decades. Their local team of talented software developers focuses on research and development, contributing to their world-leading tech.
